Living in The Stone Forest // Perú, Huayllay

Just one family lives between the Stones.

The Stone Forest of Huayllay is more than 4000 meters above sea level, so a warm shelter and good food are necessary. Elba and Alcibíades Cristóbal, who are dedicated to tourism in the area, lives there since they were born, and says "I was born here, I grew up and I got used to it", but he knows that those of us who are from Lima are not used to the extreme conditions of the Andes.

Nothing grows there. Neither fruits, nor vegetables or mushrooms. Use pieces of compacted soil to keep warm, because there is not a hint of wood for several kilometers around.

Without running water until recently, and surviving with solar panels ... life there is very hard, due to the cold, the lack of food and also the cougars that attack sheep and llamas at lesser opportunity. Apparently the life of this family seems calm and happy, but again, if you go deep inside, women carry the weight of life on their shoulders.
